After the game has been out for quite some time now, Modern Warfare 2 is still the most played game on Xbox Live today. So it would be dumb for
Infinity Ward to release extra maps for the game, right? And they would release these maps for a decent price, if they were going to charge for them,
right? Sorry to burst your bubble, but no. For the awesome price of $15, you get five new maps for Modern Warfare 2. You may be asking yourself,
"WTF?" And I'm right there with you guys.
Overpriced DLC is nothing new to the Xbox. We all remember the horse armor for Oblivion. This was
one of the first things that could be purchased for games off of Xbox Live. If I remember correctly though, it was like $5, and you could lose the
armor if the horse who was wearing the armor ran away. Someone should clarify that in the comments, but I do remember it being very overpriced.
You may be thinking to yourself, "Well, $15 for five new maps, that is only $3 a map." First off, $3 a map is still a lot in my book. I
personally think maps for an online focused FPS should be free. I understand there is work done after the game is released and that is why they charge
for maps, but you are still making money by people who continue to buy the game after it is released. Plus considering how much money Modern Warfare 2
made when it was released, I don't believe they are running out of those funds.
What makes this deal even worse is two of the maps in this
"Stimulus Package," as it is called, are maps from the first Modern Warfare game! The maps Overgrown and Crash will be part of the DLC package. Are
you freaking kidding me? Who the hell in that meeting was like, "Hey, you know what would make the $15 price tag look better? How about we throw in
maps from the last game so we don't have to do as much work, but we can still charge $15 for the maps." If I want to play Overgrown or Crash, I'll
just put in Modern Warfare 1.
Don't think I'm singling out Activision in this rant. I know that Bungie released Halo 1 and 2 maps for Halo
3. I don't understand why they do it. I can understand, with both games, if their fans were just going nuts about being able to play on those old
maps. From what I remember, Overgrown was one of my least favorites from the first Modern Warfare. Why would I want to play on that map again? If
Infinity Ward would have released three new maps for say $10 (we'll keep that price of $3 per map, and round up one because who is going to charge $9
for something on Xbox Live) and then put up the old maps as a free download, I would be less angry, but would still feel the new maps are
overpriced.
On the same day as the new maps for Modern Warfare 2 go up, EA is also releasing DLC for Bad Company 2. As I read about Bad
Companies 2 DLC, EA is toting that it is free, but to me it looks like these maps are already on the game, they are just adding new gametypes to the
pre-existing maps. They are also releasing new specializations for each class in the game, which cost money. I'm not sure what a specialization is,
but it doesn't sound like it should cost money.
I wish developers would follow the standard of Rockstar and Bethesda with DLC. Their DLC
packages were huge, and actually did something to extend the games. Both of those companies released DLC that was excellent, and well worth its money.
To me, these FPS games are just trying to get an easy buck out of people. I'm just glad that I don't have to purchase the maps, because I'm not
going to until they are free.
What do you guys think of the new maps for Call of Duty? Too overpriced, or are you gonna shell out the money to
get some new maps for the game?
