Inception has taken America by storm. Everyone is talking about the sheer brilliance of the film. While there are some negative views on the movie,
most people agree it is a very good flick, featuring a well structured story, awesome special effects, and some mind bending elements. As I watched
the movie (twice), I couldn't help but think that Inception could make a really good video game.
For those who have not seen Inception yet,
here is a quick breakdown. Leonardo Dicaprio plays a man named Dom Cobbs, who has the ability to enter peoples dreams and steal ideas stored in their
subconscious. This is called extraction. At the very root of the movie, it is a heist movie, but the idea of sneaking into someone's dreams adds a
layer of originality and uniqueness.
When Cobbs is given a job that could send him home, he takes it. But it is a risky job. Cobbs must break
into the dreams of the heir for an energy company, and plant an idea that would break up the company. This is much harder than stealing an idea since
the idea has to be unique to the person for it to take place. This is called inception. To do this, Cobbs and his team must go to a dream within a
dream within a dream to reach the core of the subjects subconscious.
So how would Inception work as a video game? Here is my idea:
The
game would put you in the role of Arthur, who is one of the main characters in the movie. He is Cobbs' right hand man. I figure Arthur would be the
main character of the game since he has a lot of experience with extraction, and knows a lot of people who have experience hacking into dreams. Cobbs
is out of the question since it is assumed he got out of the business at the end of the movie. Arthur forms a new team, and starts to get jobs to
steal ideas for big companies around the world.
Each mission would start off with you entering a dream world. The earlier missions would be
pretty straight forward, but the later missions would involve entering more than one dream.
Since there are different roles for different
people on the team, you would have the ability to control these people at different times in the game. If you were the architect, you could manipulate
the world, in real time, to ways you want. Think Geo-Modding with Red Fraction, but on a whole different level. A meter, similar to Hitman, would
alert you when the subjects subconscious starts noticing things are off. As the meter rises, so does the threat of the subconscious, just like in the
movie. If you are killed in a mission, you just wake up, and try the mission again.
On missions where you play the forger, you could change
your look to get into high security places, bringing in another element from the Hitman series. You could also have the ability to dream up big
weapons, and other things to use to complete your mission. The possibility is endless.
One idea that could be unique is the multiplayer.
Imagine co-op missions where one player takes the role of one person. Now think of levels that have you going to dreams within dreams, and so one
player would have to stay in a level as others went deeper to execute the kick. Think about how awesome it would be having to time all the kicks to
complete the mission. An example of that is the scene with Yusuf driving around in the van. That could be one player, as the others are down in
another level, and the player driving the van would have to hold off enemies while trying to make it to the spot to perform the kick.
Now when
players are down in deeper dream states, the actions that players above perform have an effect on the other players, like Yusuf's driving and causing
a zero-gravity feeling in the second level. Just think how awesome it would be to have a fist fight in a zero-gravity environment in a video game.
The game would not be without action, and it would be a video game with an awesome storyline, with some twists in there. Games with huge
twists are usually a hit, like Bioshock. Will Inception ever be made into a video game? Probably not, but the idea of it makes me want an Inception
video game really bad. It could be an unique game in a market saturated by first person shooters. But hey, one guy can dream, can't he?
